Gnosia Switch NSP Add-ons (DLC): Cadence of Hyrule Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda Switch NSP Update 1.5.0 + DLC Diamonds, which can be found in dungeons or earned by defeating every enemy in an area, are retained even if the player gets a game over. Partially carrying over roguelike elements from NecroDancer, the player will lose amassed rupees and temporary items if they lose all of their health. Throughout the game, the player can find or purchase weapons and equipment, such as shovels for digging through dirt or torches that can reveal the contents of chests, as well as recurring Zelda items such as bows, bombs, and hook shots. Whenever enemies are in an area, the player is required to move and attack in time to the music using the directional buttons, with bonus multipliers and extra rewards available for maintaining the beat. This map remains the same throughout an entire game, but certain dungeons such as those found in temples will be randomly generated every time they are visited. Players venture across the overworld, composed of predefined regions and map layouts related to Zelda lore such as Hyrule Castle or Death Mountain, but whose relative placement is procedurally generated for each new save file. ![]() Players play the majority of the game as either Link or Princess Zelda, with other characters such as NecroDancer protagonist Cadence becoming unlocked by progressing through the game or completing certain quests, each with their own unique abilities. GameplayĬadence of Hyrule combines the rhythm-based gameplay of Crypt of the NecroDancer with settings, characters, and music from The Legend of Zelda series. At the start of each new game the world tiles are swapped around to create a new layout. Though Cadence of Hyrule’s map looks and feels like a Zelda world, there is a Necrodancer element: it’s not entirely set in stone. (Don’t worry, there’s only a little Tingle). This version of the world is based primarily on A Link to the Past, but items, enemies, and influences from many Zelda games, both 2D and 3D, abound. FEZ Switch NSZĪs Link or Zelda, you explore a comparably small Hyrule map and collect instruments, just as you would in any Zelda game. It’s a little on the nose, but it’s never so aggressive that it loses its charm. Many of its central puzzles involve recreating the classic songs from Ocarina of Time, and the four temple bosses are all Zelda foes redesigned to represent musical instruments, which are also the treasures you have to collect to stop Octavo. Like so many Legends of Zelda, Cadence of Hyrule has a relatively simple story, but there’s a unifying musical theme: Cadence, hero of Crypt of the Necrodancer, gets magically transported to Hyrule just in time to help Link and Zelda thwart Octavo, a mostly flavorless musically minded villain who’s taken over Hyrule. The beat makes it feel more rewarding than the average hack-and-slash experience. The result is a best-case scenario: a mashup of the rhythm gameplay and procedural generation from Necrodancer and the evergreen adventuring fun from The Legend of Zelda. That’s not just because the people and places are based on Hyrules past, but because it inspires the same sense of curiosity and whimsy. On the other hand, it also feels like a Zelda game. ![]() Everhood Switch NSPĬadence of Hyrule advances and expands on the rhythm-based gameplay ideas of the original Crypt of the Necrodancer, applying them to a world with more than dungeons. Cadence of Hyrule cleverly blends rhythm and roguelike elements from Crypt of the Necrodancer with the canonized world and structure of classic Zelda games like A Link to the Past and, in doing so, brings fresh new ideas to both series. But there’s so much more to it than that. It’s easy to look at Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer Featuring the Legend of Zelda and see a simple reskin of an indie darling with the look of one of gaming’s biggest names. The game can also be played co-operatively with a second player on the same Switch unit with each player using one Joy-Con to move. You must be prepared to face Hyrule’s most wicked bosses, which have been transformed by magic, granting them mighty, new forms! The game features optional modes such as “fixed-beat mode”, which removes the need to play to the music, and permadeath mode, which challenges players to play through the campaign without dying once. So equip yourself with an arsenal of iconic The Legend of Zelda items, as well as the spells and weapons from Crypt of the Necrodancer.
